Tina Howell has been a fixture in Chicago poetry. Gaining her first spoken-word experience at the renowned club Spices, Tina was able to learn first-hand from those who would go on to be the stellar personalities of the poetry movement. Since then, she has appeared at the African Festival of the Arts, Taste of Chicago, MCA, and Hothouse and has hosted a weekly open mic series at Anotha Level @ Lit-X Bookstore. Tina is also a vocalist with the band Marvin Tate’s D-Settlement. Ugochi Nwaogwuguw is known best for her “vocal harmonics.” A child of Nigeria, West Africa and a former rapper turned poet gone singer, she has become extremely versatile and creative with the range of music she is able to perform. Ugochi believes if her melodies had to be reduced to a single entrée on the vast menu of music styles, she would have it read as an order of African funk with a side of soul marinated jazz and house hold the acid. Ugochi has performed in Europe and has been featured on WTTW’s Wild Chicago as well as performed with acclaimed artists such as Chicago’s own Common and Eric Benet. Her new album “African Butafly” will be made available to the public in August 2000.Performers
