This workshop will focus on the work of authors who have achieved outstanding results with poetry and prose suitable for both page and performance. We will read, listen to recordings, and discuss the work of Dickerson, William Carlos Williams, Gertrude Stein, e.e. cummings, Gwendolyn Brooks, Alan Gisberg, Hugh Selby Jr., Patti Smith, Sapphire, Paul Beatty, Dana Bryant, and various recording artists.
Work by participants submitted previous to the session will be commented on and revised in preparation for an hour of discussion and a one hour reading by the class. Some issues that will be addressed include: Does the piece stand alone on the page, or does it only come alive when spoken? What considerations have been made in the editing process for breath, line breaks, word choice, wordplay or invention? Is the work too reliant on the choice, wordplay and invention? Is the work too reliant on the speaker’s intonation and phrasing? We will edit wiht the belief that nothing is unsalvageable through the hard work of revision, and that a tight, well written poem or piece of prose is never a dissapointment to those listening to it.Performers
