Hyphenated People seeks to explore and re-examine what America means to people whose fight for equality, freedom, and identity continues to the present day, despite over 200 years of American independence.
Teresa Vazquez is of Afro-Cuban descent, born and raised on the south side of Chicago. Her artistic interests lie in the performance of original spoken word and music, and exploring the nexus of sound, language and meaning. Her work has been published in Womb Journeys: Beyond Regret, Joy and Shame (Sun Crumbs Press, 2000). Her self-produced CD, A Woman Loving (Black and Brown Wadada, 2000) was well received both in and out of Chicago. Bryant Smith is a poet, writer, and concerned member of diaspora, residing on the south side of Chicago. He has performed at venues throughout Chicago and abroad. He is a member of the Gwendolyn Brooks Collective, and the Chicago Writers Collective. He hass been published in Warpland Journal, and he is the recipient of the 1997 Gwendolyn Brooks Poetry Award.
