Since 9/11/01 a community of artists and writers in Chicago have been meeting to dialogue, build and create a response to the tragedy of global suffering and injustice. Tonight we present performance, poetry, theater and discussion. The panel discussion will include poet Ali Abunima, community activist RayHanania, novelist Rosellyn Brown, and writer/journalist Olivia Maciel. The moderator will be poet/author/educator Reginald Gibbons.
Reginald Gibbons is an award-winning poet and author. His first novel, ?Sweet Bitter? was met with critical acclaim. He is currently a faculty member at Northwestern University. Ali Abunimah is a writer and commentator on Middle East and Arab-American affairs. His articles have appeared in The New York Times, The Chicago Tribune, The Financial Times, The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Jordan Times and Haaretz, among others. He is a contributor to ?The New Intifada,? the first book on that topic (Verso 2001). Olivia Maciel is an author/journalist living in Chicago. She is the author of ?Mas Salado que Dulce/Saltier Than Sweet?, and a recipient of the Jose Marti? Literary Prize. Ray Hanania is an Arab-American writer and author, and a former veteran political reporter having covered Chicago?s City Hall for 16 years until 1992. He is the author of the book ?I?m Glad I Look Like a Terrorist: Growing Up Arab in America?, and examination of ethnicity and profiling in American society. Rosellen Brown is the author of five novels. Her most recent title, ?Half A Heart?, was published in 2000. She has received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the Ingram Merrill Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts. She currently teaches in the Graduate Creative Writing Program at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Performance by youth performance poetry group Kuumba Lynx w/Ugochi. Kuumba Lynx is a performance poetry group that uses the arts as a means to provide cultural and historical education while guiding youth through the process of creating their own performances.Performers
