He is the Distinguished University Professor and the founder and director-emeritus of the Gwendolyn Brooks Center at Chicago State University.

In August 2001 he was appointed director of Chicago State University?s newly created Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing Program. He is the recipient of many awards for his poetry and cultural work, and is the author/publisher of twenty four books, including the best selling Don?t Cry, Scream (1969), Black Men: Obsolete, Single, Dangerous? (1990), Claiming Earth: Race, Rage, Rape, Redemption (1994) and Heartlove: Wedding and Love Poems (1998). His latest book promises to continue in the tradition of substantive, impacting, and socially relevant black literature.
