Native Chicagoan, Stuart Dybek, author of The Coast of Chicago (1990). Childhood and other Neighborhoods f1980) and Brass Knuckles (1979) is a writer in the tradition of Nelson Algren and JamesT Farrell. Much of Dybek’s fiction addresses childhood and adolescent life in the immigrant, inner-city neighborhood of his youth. His work can be surreal, gntty and occasionally violent. Dybek will read from l Sailed With Magellan (Farrar, Straus and Giroux 2003) his latest book of connected stories. Dybek is currently a professor of English at Western Michigan University.

Timuel Black is an educator, activist and author. His latest book, Bridges of memory (Northwestern University Press, 2003) explores African American Migration to Chicago post WWI. Through the research of oral history with teachers, musicians, younger residents and politicians, Black depicts teh multifaceted history of African Americans on Chicago’s South Side.
