Carlos Cumpian and Denise Sweet share the stage for a National Poetry Month installment of Word Gourmet with Nina Corwin.

Denise Sweet is a poet and an associate professor at UW-Green Bay. An Anishinaabe (aka “Ojibvve” or “Chippewa”) from White Earth (makwa dodem), she has presented over 100 public readings/performances throughout the U.S., and in Canada, Mexico, Guatemala, and Great Britain. In July 1998, she was one of five U.S. writers sponsored by the U.S. Embassy to attend the 1st World Congress of Indigenous Literatures of the

Americas held in Guatemala City, Guatemala.

A veteran Chicano writer, Cumpian hails from San Antonio, Texaztlan, but has planted firm roots that extend beneath Chicago’s concrete sidewalks and into the rich, dark soil of the Midwest. Cumpian was named among the Chicago Public Library’s “Top Ten” most requested poets, and his poetry has been published by some of the country’s spirited small press magazines as well as in numerous anthologies. Editor of March Abrazo Press, Cumpian has been instrumental in establishing the press’ presence as a respected independent publisher of Latino and Native American poetry. His books Latina Rainbow [Grolier/Children’s Press 1995] and Armadilloo Charm

(Tia Chucha Press 1996) have received positive reviews for their contribution to Chicano literature. Cumpian currently teaches high school English in Chicago and works to provide quality education to inner-city high school youth .
