A science fiction melodrama, the piece deals with two women who have a psychic connection before they meet. Joselyn and Josephine are luddites and fear contemporary technology. They seek help from
a Dr. Griffin, a frenzied experimental psychiatrist. In a blind determination to cure them of their technophobia the doctor\’s treatments become erratic and severe. The women meet, join forces and confront the doctor as well as their fears of living in a world dependent on machines.
The piece comments on women\’s relationships with technology and confidence with their own bodies. The title \””KICK\”” references a pregnancy in the story as well as the creative instinct or \””kick\””.
KICK was shot on location in Chicago in 2009. A visual and sonic experience, KICK utilizes the colors of traditional 1950s technicolor filmmaking along with a contemporary electronic score and experimental sound design.
