In celebration of the Guild Complex?s Tenth Anniversary we offer Ten-Pak. Each Ten-Pak will present an artist or act that appeared at the Complex over the last decade, a voice or act that has never appeared at the Complex, and a taste of what we do, including poetry, prose, music, performance, multi-media, books, and visual art all on the same night.

M. Evelina Galang is the author of Her Wild American Self, a collection of short fiction from Coffee House Press. She has been widely published and her collection?s title story has been short listed by both Best American Short Stories and Pushcart Prize. She has been the recipient of numerous awards including the John Gardner Scholar in Fiction at Bread Loaf Writer?s Conference, the Colorado State University Graduate Diversity Educational Fellowship, a Lannan Fellowship, and a grant from the Illinois Arts Council. She teaches in the MFA Writing Program at the School of the Art Institute in Chicago and will be joining the creative writing faculty of Iowa State University in the fall of 1999. Currently she is at work on her novel, What?s This Tribe?, a screenplay, Dalaga, and Screaming Monkeys, an anthology of Asian American Art and Literature. Mary Hawley has performed at most of Chicago?s poetry venues, the Chicago Reader called her poetry ?subtle, spare, delicate yet lethally direct.? Her first book of poetry is Double Tongues (Tia Chucha Press). Her poems have appeared in many literary journals including, Spoon River Poetry Review, Notre Dame Review, Luna, Strong Coffee, Bloomsbury Reivew, and Naming the Daytime Moon: Stories and Poems by Chicago Women and Stray Bullets: A Celebration of Chicago Saloon Poetry. She was project manager and co-translator of Astillas de Luz/Shards of Light, (Tia Chucha Press). J. Ivy is one of the ?Young Lions? on the Chicago poetry scene. In a short period of tie J. has performed at Parkwest, House of Blues (Chicago), and Black Expo Chicago, and he has performed across the United States at venues including the Timbuktu Poetry Slam (Philadelphia). He also serves as co-host with Malik Yusef at the Cotton Club and Rituals. His writing is mesmerizing, with great depth and content. Terrry Jacobus began studying creative writing at Northwestern Illinois University under Gwendolyn Brooks, Edward Dorn, Tom Raworth and Ted Berrigan. Currently he is the consulting poetry editor of Strong Coffee Magazine. Terry has appeared on WTTW?s ?Wild Chicago,? National Public Radio, and WMXT?s ?Vantage Point.? He has read at the University of Chicago, Northwestern University, MCA (Chicago), Chicago Filmmakers, Guild Complex, St. Mark?s Church (New York) and many other national venues. Nine years ago, vocalist Glenda Fairella Baker and storyteller Emily Hooper Lansana met in a feminist and children?s bookstore in Chicago. This was a fitting site for the birth of their performance duo, IN THE SPIRIT. Their repertoire contains adaptations of African and African-American folktales, historical narratives, feminist and children?s poetry, spiritual music, and original work. Performance highlights include: The Chicago Children?s Museum, DePaul University, The National Association of Black Storytellers Festival, and the Field Museum of Natural History (Chicago). Tomas de Utera is an internationally acclaimed flamenco guitarist and flamencologist who splits his time between Chicago and his home in Seville, Spain. He has just returned from a tour in Spain, France, and the United Kingdom. He has made numerous recordings over the years including a comeo appearance on the ?Sanke in the Heart? CD (Tia Chucha Press). Tomas will also be accompanied by his daugher in true Andalusian Gypsy Family setting. La Pastora will sing his lyrics as well as those of Spanish poets of he ?Generacion del 27.? Ron Lindenburg (www.rgcl.com) is a novelist and visual artist. Early on he worked for the renowned painter Larry Rivers and has studied at the School of the Art Institute. He has been represented by numerous galleries and has also shown in most of the city?s major alternative spaces.Performers
