An all-women art show opening this week strives to dispel notions that the women’s movement has died. The SisterSerpents’ 3rd Annual Exhibit features the work of about 30 female artists from around the country.
SisterSerpents is a women’s art group founded in Chicago in 1989 by women artists offended by what they viewed as anti-feminist politics. Their shows in New York, Germany and Texas have been criticized for their pro-feminist stance.
Jeramy Turner, SisterSerpents co-founder and a Chicago painter, says she delights in the controversy. “Our aim is to have a show for women using art as a way to express a reaction against the way women are mistreated,” she said.
The show, which includes paintings, sculpture, photography and a large-scale installation of a kitchen, opens with a reception from 6 p.m. to midnight Friday at At the Gallery, 1543 W. Division St. The show runs through June 11. The gallery is open noon to 8 p.m.
